Celebrating Failure

The Power of Taking Risks, Making Mistakes, and Thinking Big - By Ralph Heath 2009
It is so refreshing to have an author talk frankly about the reality of failure in our lives and our fears of not matching up with our competitors. Ralph Heath has spent most of his time as an owner of an advertising company, admittedly, one of the most competitive and volatile of businesses. This book tells his story of success and failure and the life lessons along the way.
He does not cover old clichés i.e., merely reframing problems into “challenges”. We all experience failure in our lives that serve as lessons for not just our lives but our business decisions. Things can be taken away from us unfairly. It is how we respond to those disappointments and heart aches that make us better people and in turn better decision makers the inevitable next time.
The thirty chapters in this book are very readable and have valuable lessons for any business leader. Here are some examples of just a few chapters:
Resistance to Change
Leading from the Back
Hire for Attitude
Pushing Yourself to Fail
Never Threaten to Quit Anything
Losing Control
Let Me Help You Find a New Job
Confronting Fear and Surviving the Epic Crisis.
I have the pleasure of being the recipient of numerous books for review each week. I must confess that this one arrived only a few days ago and I was immediately drawn in to Heath’s interesting “down to earth” style of writing. It went immediately to the top of the stack. This is Ralph Heath’s first book and I would have to say that this book on failure is a success.

Mind Your Own Business
Remember when you were growing up and found yourself in the middle of some drama at school or on the team? Remember mom’s wise words? “Mind your own business.” Mom was so right and actually a prophet in disguise. If you are the employee who has received a pink slip or the retired baby boomer whose 401K has disappeared in this current economy, then it may be time to mind your own business.
Mind your own business. That’s how this country began over 200 years ago. The pioneers left their employers, bad conditions, overbearing governments and traveled thousands of miles to mind their own businesses. They parlayed their skills and passions into businesses to support a new country and new economy. Was it hard? Yes. Was it worth it? YES.
The good news is that today the new pioneer – new business owner needn’t travel thousands of miles to begin a business. Technology gives everyone an opportunity to begin a business and become self reliant. Granted there will be no paid vacations, paid sick days, or even a weekly paycheck. But if the new pioneer is as determined and perceptive as the ones of yesteryear, they too will have more than a gold watch and defunct retirement fund to show for their hard work.
Whether you are a brand new entrepreneur that has never owned a business or a recycled entrepreneur surfacing after a few years of retirement, BABM wants to help you build a strong foundation for you new endeavor. As you read this issue of BABM you will notice a few articles that are designated our Mind Your Own Business articles. These articles are specifically written for you although even seasoned business owners may gleam a pearl or two.
For those of you who retired from your businesses years ago, you will find that the rules have changed a bit. Technology and the internet will play a very big part in your business and we are here to lead you through the sometimes very confusing and deceptive information that is being dished out to anyone who will listen. As with every new frontier --- there will be carpetbaggers so beware.
