Four Keys To Success For New Entrepreneurs
By Brandi Kamenar
Three years ago, in the middle of a recession, I took a leap of faith and launched my company. I didn’t have a bank loan, but I did have my conviction: I could leverage my twin loves for fashion and business into a successful niche firm that focuses on clients in the fashion, lifestyle and entertainment industries.
It wasn’t the first calculated risk I’d taken in my life. When I was just 18, I left Pittsburgh with $814 in my pocket and a one-way ticket to Tampa. I knew I wanted to study fashion and design, and landed several modeling gigs over the next decade. But I discovered my style and talents as a fashion visionary could do more good behind the camera crafting the personal style of executives, as well as the corporate brand of their innovative and exciting companies.
While in Pittsburgh in January, I sat down with a television reporter from WTAE-TV who asked me to share the four keys to success for an entrepreneur just starting out.
- Dream big. A friend recently said to me, “I dream of paying my mortgage and sending my kids to college. You dream of running a multimillion-dollar company.” Entrepreneurs see what’s possible, not just what’s probable. They see what can be, not just what is. They must have faith in themselves and their vision, and be able to articulate it to everyone else. And they have to have the courage to keep looking for new ways to push forward, even in times of adversity.
- Network. Whether you are just starting out, or are an established business leader, you need to always be meeting new people. These contacts could become your next customers or clients, or could introduce you to someone else who will buy your products and services.
Surround yourself with people who can help you. This is a natural extension of networking. By going to events, charity galas and parties, I’ve met so many gifted people who have helped me build my business and strengthen my skills. In return, I’m able to help them grow their skills and businesses. The most successful business owners are the ones who have not only a stable of trusted advisors, but also a steady stream of new people who can offer interesting ideas.

- Expect to work hard. The number one reason people fail is because they didn’t expect the amount of work it would take to make their dream come true. I have another friend who said it’s impossible to have work-life balance when you’re building your business. It’s true. You may be able to compartmentalize your personal life so you can enjoy your kids’ games or have a wonderful time out with friends, but just about every successful entrepreneur I know still logs on for at least one more hour of work before bedtime.
How do these four keys to success help you establish your own brand? Your vision of who you are and who you want to be, the types of events you attend, the advisors whose advice you choose to heed, and the amount of time and effort you put into growing your company will tell everyone who meets you what kind of a business person you are. Make sure these four elements combine to give the personal and professional image you want to portray!
