Set Your Spirit Free in Hawaii

By Leslie Joy Ickowitz
Published: November / December 2008

Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say on a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day. That’s the island greeting that we send to you from the land where palm trees sway. Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright. The sun to shine by day and all the stars at night. Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaii’s way to say Merry Christmas to you. ~ Bing Crosby

Anytime is a good time to visit Hawaii, a year round paradise bursting with natural wonders. And with vivid picture postcards tied in colorful ribbons, you can wrap up Hawaii this holiday season and put it under your tree.

One of the best-kept secrets by far is that it’s entirely possible to do Hawaii on a budget—for about the same you might pay for a deluxe Caribbean getaway. But, of course, the sky is the limit and, whether ultra-economical or obscenely expensive, a Hawaiian vacation is one to cherish.

By land, by air and by sea, Hawaii’s islands offer endless adventure balanced with perfect tranquility. Play golf cliffside accompanied by the sounds of crashing waves and a refreshing island breeze. Join the kids for a splash in whirling, winding swimming pools that rival adventure theme parks. Surf’s up at sprawling, windswept beaches, and high above the landscape, helicopter tours provide glimpses of hidden Hawaii. The tropics extend underwater where, to the delight of snorkelers and scuba divers, vibrant marine life mingles among brilliant coral reefs. Hawaii’s magic simply cannot be contained. Touching on a few highlights barely scratches the surface of the rare and lovely treasures awaiting its visitors.

We begin our expedition on the island of Oahu anchored by Diamond Head volcano on the southeast coast and home to famous Waikiki Beach. From casual and elegant eateries to world-class shopping and nightlife, Hawaii’s capital city, Honolulu, offers every amenity one could desire. But leave the bustling cosmopolitan area behind for a slow drive around the island, and find yourself surrounded with exquisite beauty in every direction. In addition to lush, mountainous landscapes and sparkling ocean views, a tour of the Polynesian Cultural Center adds rich perspective to your Hawaiian experience.

Feast your eyes on the magnificence of Maui. The allure of Haleakala at sunrise draws visitors from around the world. Only early risers are fortunate enough to catch this stellar spectacle, followed by an exhilarating bike ride or hike along the crater’s surface. Seven thrilling waterfalls await you at the end of the serpentine road to Hana. Plan a full day to absorb the many captivating sights along this leisurely drive. December through May delivers another awe-inspiring element to Maui when you may witness the migration of humpback whales.

The “Garden Isle,” Kauai, is saturated with scenery offering enchantment from every angle. Even Floridians can appreciate a place where no building extends higher than the tallest palm tree. Soaring high above waterfalls and rainbows, catch a bird’s eye view of Kauai’s verdant rainforests via helicopter. Hike the stunning Napali Coast where 3,000-foot high cliffs plunge into the Pacific. Zodiac excursions hug the rugged coastline revealing hidden grottoes carved out by the ocean.

Hawaii, also known as The Big Island, boasts famed Kilauea, the chain’s only remaining active volcano. Venture to Volcano National Park to get up close to this legendary giant. Nightfall brings the experience to a new level when you can “creep up to the ooze” of glowing hot lava as it spills down the mountainside and slides into the ocean. From the depths of Waipio Valley to the summit of Mauna Kea, there’s no shortage of dramatic displays on The Big Island.

Immerse yourself in luxury along Hawaii’s Kohala Coast or steal away to the lesser-known islands of Molokai and Lanai for a truly exclusive treat. Wherever you find yourself, contemplating ways to spend your days can be accomplished while lounging on blissful beaches or under a palm tree poolside. Each Hawaiian island features distinctive attributes, and packages are designed with sightseeing in mind. Car rentals are included on Kauai, Maui and on The Big Island where after days spent touring, it’s time to unwind by sunset or under star-filled skies. With no boundaries to the splendor that tomorrow holds, rest your head embraced by Hawaii’s hospitality and grace.

If you dream of Hawaii, picture this: It’s far more beautiful than mere imagination can behold. From romantic escapades to family holidays, Hawaii possesses something special for everyone. Its appeal is unique to each individual and every day promises new discoveries. Bask in the radiance of Polynesian sunshine and marvel at mountains aglow with moonlight. Set a course for exploration or get swept up in serenity. Wherever your voyage leads, set your spirit free in Hawaii.
